Dr. Robert Hatfield

Research Associate, CEOAS

Education & Positions Held:

Postdoctoral Research Assistant, CEOAS, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, USA. 2010 – present. Postdoctoral Research Fellow, EES, University of Windsor, Canada, 2008. Ph.D., Physical Geography, Lancaster University, U.K., 2008. B.Sc. (Hons), Geography, Lancaster University, U.K., 2003.

Research Interests:

Broadly speaking my research interests group around the application of magnetic techniques to sediments in a range of environmental settings. My research to date has focused on the development and application of particle size specific magnetic fingerprinting to soils, tills, suspended sediments, lake sediments, and coastal deposits in order to trace sediments and understand sediment provenance over various time periods from individual fluvial events to Holocene timeframes. I am also interested in paleo-environmental reconstruction and the interactions of both people and climate with the environment, and in turn the effect this has on the sedimentological system. I am currently working on the magnetic ground-truthing of sediments draining Greenland in the North Atlantic with a view to better constrain Greenland’s deglaciation history and paleo-ice sheet extent.

Other Interests:

My (academic) interests in the environment probably stemmed from my love of the great outdoors. When I am not in the lab you will probably find me on a mountain bike, hiking or climbing somewhere, or when the opportunity arises, skiing.
