Gearing Up For Sampling

Next week the PMag-Lab in conjunction with the OSU Marine Geology Repository are hosting two researchers from the University of Pittsburg. Aubrey Hillman (Ph.D. student) and Dr. Darren Larsen (Post Doc.), both work with Dr. Mark Abbott and are interested in the paleo-environmental record of Fish Lake that PI Joe Stoner and Post Doc. Rob Hatfield along with Dr.s Larsen and Abbott recovered from the southern Wasatch Plateau in Utah in February 2014. Aubrey and Darren will be staying with us for the whole week next week as we split, sample and sample the cores for paleomagnetic and paleoenvironmental analyses. More fun in the mud with the PMag-Lab!

<p>Next week the P-Mag Lab’s Rob Hatfield, Leah Ziegler, and Sarah Strano will be attending the three day <a href="http://earthref.org/events/MAGIC/2014/">MagIC workshop</a> in La Jolla CA at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD. Rob will be presenting a poster similar to that he presented at last years AGU Fall meeting on a Holocene record from west Greenland (<a href="http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2013AGUFMGP41B1120H">see AGU absract here</a>), while Sarah will be presenting on her Holocene Paleomagnetic Record of the North Atlantic (<a href="http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2013AGUFMGP41B1118S">see AGU abstract here</a>). It will be a good opportunity to see old friends and forge some new ones as the paleomagnetic community descends on southern California for a few days.</p>

<p><span class="Apple-Mail-URLShareWrapperClass"><span class="Apple-Mail-URLShareSharedContentClass">Using sediment core evidence taken from the sea floor off Greenland’s coast Rob Hatfield and Joe Stoner of the P-mag lab in collaboration with Anders Carlson (OSU) and Alberto Reyes (U. Alberta) and others were able to estimate the extent of the Greenland Ice Sheet during an interglacial period 400,000 years ago, when global sea levels were much higher than today. Published in <a href="http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v510/n7506/full/nature13456.html">Nature</a> the study was also reported by the <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/environment/index.ssf/2014/06/greenland_ice_sheet_may_face_t.html">Oregonian</a>, <a href="https://uk.news.yahoo.com/global-warming-400-000-years-ago-caused-greenland-160000497.html#VtmRt9Q">Yahoo News UK</a>, the <a href="http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/global-warming-400000-years-ago-caused-greenland-ice-sheet-collapse-1454188">International Business Times</a>, and the <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22229752.600-ice-sheets-may-have-already-passed-point-of-no-return.html#.U7G7ffldV8F">New Scientist</a>. </span></span></p>
<p>Editors summary from the Nature website: “<span style="color: #363636;">There is remarkably little geological evidence from which to determine the magnitude of the retreat of the Greenland ice sheet during past interglaciations, which in turn limits our ability to estimate its future contributions to sea-level rise in a warming world. Alberto Reyes </span><i style="color: #363636;">et al</i><span style="color: #363636;">. now provide isotopic evidence from an ocean sediment core from the nearby Labrador Sea that suggests that the bulk of the southern Greenland ice sheet collapsed during the Marine Isotope Stage 11 ‘super interglacial’ about 400,000 years ago. The authors comment that this ice-sheet collapse occurred in response to climate conditions that are within the range of those anticipated by the end of the twenty-first century.”</span></p>
